Self-guided coaching gives you a proven training system at €100–200/month and puts you in charge of execution. 1-on-1 coaching adds daily individual adjustment and accountability at €400–800+/month. For most self-motivated age-groupers, the system — not the contact time — is what drives results.
What's the actual difference?
Both formats can be built on exactly the same methodology. In SAINT-TRI's case, self-guided (Smart) athletes and 1-on-1 (Premium/Platinum) athletes train on the same periodization logic, the same zone system and the same race-preparation structure. The difference is the feedback loop:
| Self-guided | 1-on-1 coaching | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical cost | €100–200 / month | €400–800+ / month |
| Training plan | Ready-made, periodized by race & level | Individually built and rebuilt |
| Plan adjustments | You apply the method's rules yourself | Coach adjusts after every session |
| Feedback | Group Q&A calls, community | Daily, individual, unlimited |
| Learning effect | High — you learn the why | Lower — the coach thinks for you |
| Accountability | Yours | Shared with your coach |
| Best for | Self-driven age-groupers | Podium/Kona goals, complex situations |
When self-guided is the smarter choice
- You're self-motivated. You'll open the plan and do the work without someone chasing you.
- Your goal is to finish strong or set a personal best — not to win your age group this season.
- You want to understand your training. A good self-guided program teaches the method, so every session has a visible purpose.
- Budget matters. Over a 40-week Ironman build, the difference between formats is €4,000–6,000.
When 1-on-1 coaching is worth every cent
- Podium or Kona qualification is the goal. At that level, individual fine-tuning of load and recovery makes the difference.
- Your life is unpredictable — shift work, frequent travel, a history of injury. Constant re-planning is exactly what a personal coach does.
- You've plateaued after several seasons and need an outside eye on your data.
The middle path most athletes miss
The choice isn't binary. A well-designed self-guided program closes most of the gap with three mechanisms: ready-made periodized plans by race distance and level, a monthly group Q&A with a coach for the questions a PDF can never answer, and an athlete community for accountability. You keep the €300–600 monthly difference — and you still train on a champion-proven system.
SAINT-TRI Smart is Jo Spindler's complete system in self-guided format: 50+ methodology videos, periodized plans delivered in the Final Surge app, monthly coach Q&A and a private community — for €190/month (first 4 weeks €49).

Is self-guided triathlon coaching effective?
Yes — if the plan is built on a proven methodology and you're self-motivated. For most age-groupers the quality of the system matters more than the frequency of coach contact.
How much does triathlon coaching cost in 2026?
Personal 1-on-1 coaching typically runs €400–800+ per month. Self-guided programs built on a coach's methodology run €100–200 per month. Static PDF plans cost €50–150 one-off, but nothing updates and nobody answers your questions.
Can I switch from self-guided to full coaching later?
Yes — and it's a common path: start self-guided, learn the method, and upgrade to 1-on-1 when your goals demand individual programming. At SAINT-TRI you can move to Premium or Platinum at any time.
